当部門では慢性腎臓病に併発する動脈硬化性臓器障害含む老年病の病態を解明し、新しい予防法や治療法を開発するための研究を行っております。


 現在、慢性腎不全となり血液・腹膜透析を導入される患者は年間約3万人おり、この数は年々増えていく傾向にあります。末期腎不全の主な原因疾患である糖尿病腎症、慢性腎炎、さらには、超高齢化をむかえた本邦においては、加齢や動脈硬化に伴う慢性腎臓病患者が増加の一途を示しており、その発症・進展機序の一刻も早い解明が期待されています。私達臨床医の義務と考える基礎研究と臨床との相互のフィードバック(From Bench to Bedside, From Bedside to Bench)を念頭におき、これら病態の解明のために分子生物学的手法を駆使し研究を行っています。
